It further underscores the significance of collective worship as a fundamental element of a pattern of community life that is spiritually and materially prosperous. Furthermore, devotional services at the House of Worship are universal in character, welcoming all to be uplifted through opening their hearts and minds to the Words of God.


While worship forms a key tenet of the House of Worship, service to humanity is considered an outward expression of the inner transformation that worship brings about. This service is expressed through deeds carried out in the spirit of service for the betterment of humanity; communal worship in homes, neighborhoods and villages; an educational process that builds the capacity of individuals to serve others; and, through a pattern of community life embodying the principle of the oneness of humanity. In this manner, a House of Worship is envisioned to become a centre for social, scientific, educational and humanitarian services, living up to its title of the “dawning-place of the mention of God”.

On 15 August 1947, the President of the Constituent Assembly, Dr. Rajendra Prasad read out some congratulatory messages on India's attainment of Independence.

The Indian Council Act of 1861 sought 'to make better provisions for the Constitution of the Council for the Governor - General' and 'for the Local Government of the several Presidencies and Provinces'. The act was said to be the 'Prime charter of the Indian Legislatures' inaugurating the 'system of Legislative devaluation of India'. It introduced important changes in the machinery for Legislation, both at the Central and Provisional Level.

The first draft of the Constitution of India was prepared in October 1947 by the Advisory Branch of the Office of the Constituent Assembly.

The first faint beginning of a Central Legislature for India are to be found in the charter Act of 1833, which introduced important changes in the Legislative System Operating in India. The Act of 1833 while renewing the Charter of the Company for twenty years, terminated its trading rights and rendered it only an administrative agency of the Crown in India.

With the founding of the Indian National Congress in 1885 began the process of gradual relaxation of imperial control and the evolution of responsible Government in India.

The Act of 1892 was certainly an improvement on the 1861 Act, insofar as it brought in a representative element in the Legislative Council and relaxed to some extent the restrictions on the working of the Council. The entry of the 'elected' members marked the beginning of the new era in the life of the Council. It was recognized that the function of the Council was more than merely legislative or advisory.

Important changes were made in the Constitution and functions of the Indian Legislatures by the Act of 1909. The bodies which were thus far Council for the purpose of making laws and registrations now for the first time, formally got the nomenclature of 'Legislative Councils' under the Act. Both the size and functions of the Councils were enlarged.

As supplemented by rules made under it, the 1919 Act introduced many important changes in the Indian Constitutional System. In the case of the legislature at the Centre, the erstwhile Indian Legislative Council was replaced by a bicameral legislature constituting of a Council of State (Upper House) and Legislature Assembly (Lower House).

The Act of 1935 aimed at providing a federal structure. The Governor-General was to have a Council of Ministers, not exceeding ten in number, 'to aid and advise' him in the exercise of his functions' except where he was required to exercise his functions in 'his discretion' or in 'his individual judgment'. There was no reference in the Act to either collective or individual responsibility of the Ministers to the Federal Legislatures, although every Minister was required to be a member of either House of that Legislature.

First meeting of the Constituent Assembly was held in the Constitutional Hall (the present Central Hall of Parliament House) at Eleven of the Clock in the morning. Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha was invited to be the temporary Chairman of the Assembly, following the French precedent of appointing the oldest member to that post. Acharya J.B. Kriplani while inviting Dr. Sinha on behalf of all the members of the Constituent Assembly referred to him as not only the oldest member but also the oldest parliamentarian in India.

The second reading of the Constitution was completed on 16 November 1949, and on the next day the Assembly took up the Third reading of the Constitution with a motion moved by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar 'that the Constitution as settled by the Constituent Assembly be passed' . The motion was was adopted on 26 November 1949 and thus on that day, people of India in their Constituent Assembly adopted, enacted and gave to themselves the Constitution of the Sovereign Democratic Republic of India

At the centre of New Delhi stands the 42 m high India Gate, an "Arc-de-Triomphe" like archway in the middle of a crossroad. Almost similar to its French counterpart, it commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during the World War I. The memorial bears the names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919.

The foundation stone of India Gate was laid by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Connaught in 1921 and it was designed by Edwin Lutyens. The monument was dedicated to the nation 10 years later by the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin. Another memorial, Amar Jawan Jyoti was added much later, after India got its independence. The eternal flame burns day and night under the arch to remind the nation of soldiers who laid down their lives in the Indo-Pakistan War of December 1971.

The entire arch stands on a low base of red Bharatpur stone and rises in stages to a huge moulding. The cornice is inscribed with the Imperial suns while both sides of the arch have INDIA, flanked by the dates MCMXIV (1914 left) and MCMXIX (1919 right). The shallow domed bowl at the top was intended to be filled with burning oil on anniversaries but this is rarely done.
